Facebook reached an impressive milestone on Thursday when 1 billion users logged on to the social media site in a single day, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on his Facebook page. To put things in perspective, that means one in seven people living on Earth used the site to update their status, post pictures or simply to just connect with family and friends.

1 Billion is a lot of users on Facebook at once. Facebook must have some very powerful web servers, switches, and routers to be able to keep 1 Billion people logged in at once without reports of a lot of slowdown problems on Facebook.

nice to know their servers can handle that.

There are also many people with shared Facebook accounts like music bands to use to promote their music, and shows, so there could be some accounts which are used by many people, so it can be difficult to know how many people use Facebook.

Aren't those facebook pages, not accounts? Or does Facebook consider pages to be accounts too?

You need an account to make a Facebook page, so a lot of people like different band members, and promotional staff use the same account to post on a band or singers Facebook page, and account where they can set posts to public, so other non-friends can see their posts.

I bet, a lot of celebrities hire a bunch of staff to post stuff on to their Facebook Account, and pages, so a lot of people use their account.
