Adoption of Microsoft’s Windows 10 is slowing down after an aggressive first month, according to new data from NetMarketShare.

Thanks in large part to an expensive marketing campaign, combined with free upgrades for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 users, Windows 10 managed to seize 5.21 percent of the desktop/laptop OS market in August, the first full month of its release.

In September, however, the operating system’s market-share rose to 6.63 percent, a significant leveling-off in month-over-month gains. At this early point, Windows 10 still lags well behind Windows 7 (with 56.53 percent of the market), Windows XP (12.21 percent), and Windows 8.1 (10.72 percent), although it did manage to surpass the much-maligned Windows 8, which only has a 2.6 percent market-share

Never expected Windows 10 to level off, so fast. I guest people who don't like Windows 10 are going back to Windows 7, 8.1, and other Operating systems like Linux, Android, Chrome OS Chromebooks, iOS and Macs.

I wonder if Windows 10 could stay level, or even start declining like Windows Vista, and 8/8.1 which declined after 7 and 10 was released, and when people learned how bad they were after using Vista, and 8/8.1 for a few weeks to months.

Isn't that because all the machines have W10 on it? Due to that upgrade that placed most of the files on your W7 or W8 machine?

I think the Windows 10 install number is for people who agreed to install Windows 10 on their PC, but not for people who downloaded the Windows install files, but did not install 10.

Windows 7 still have more users than Windows 10. Windows 7 is installed on has 56.53% of computers, but Windows 10 is installed on 6.63% of computers according to NetMarketShare .

Windows 8.1 still have 10.72% of the marketshare for PC OS.

67% of all the PC in the world which are running Windows 7, or 8.1 are still eligible for the free Windows 10 update, but many refuse to agree to Install it on their PC.

Can't blame them, sucks they tie the W10 key to your hardware.

I agree, it stinks that they tie a Windows 10 key to your hardware. But, I read a comment on a blog post that you can call MS to re-activate your Key, so it works with new hardware.

I think tieing a OS key for hardware only makes sense on non-upgradeable devices like smartphones, tablets, and some Apple and Windows laptops where everything is stuck on a large circuit board, and is not upgradeable by the user.

I thought Windows XP was better than Vista because XP ran faster and more stable on most computers, and can run more software without compatibility problems like on Vista.

I thought Vista user interface look more futuristic than XP, but the nicer user interface made some computers run slower than the basic user interface in XP.
