Just curious. With the NX coming out and all, when do you think the Wii U will say goodbye to its online play?

Mario kart and Smash bros will last the longest, but I give it 3 years tops and that's being generous.

I give it two or three years. Assuming the Nintendo NX comes out this year, then it's likely the Wii U online servers will be discontinued a few years later, with the possible exception of Mario Maker (assuming it gets an NX version, since it needs the existing levels). For comparison, Nintendo Wi-fi connection was shut down in 2014, whereas the 3DS first came out in 2011.

I forgot about the Mario Maker server, that will be a shame when that goes offline one day.

I think I pretty much agree with you, guys.
Around 3 years pist NX release sounds reasonable, unless they use the same ones that mantain the WiiU snd 3DS networks.

Well look when the Nintendo DS lost it's access to Nintendo WiFi several years after the Nintendo 3DS came out. I'd say that the Wii U has plenty of time left. We have very little information on the Nintendo NX as it is I wouldn't worry too much about losing WiFi Support on the Wii U.

just comes down to how active the services are and right now the Wii U is not doing well on activity.

That's true however I think part of the reason Nintendo shut down WiFi Services for older devices was due to people exploiting glitches in their Pokemon Online Play to better themselves in later games where you can transfer over older Pokemon. But a lack of use could become a cost-benefit issue for Nintendo.

I can see that, people love to cheat in Pokemon.

I see maybe in the next 2 years or so. The Nintendo NX is scheduled to come out next year in March. Given that bit of information, I'm going to say that they will try to cut ties with it soon after it comes out so people will get the next console and move on. But that's just my two cents.

Maybe something major will happen and they'll decide to keep Wii U online play for a little while longer.
