So I'm looking for a little feedback to make GL better for you our viewing members.

First question is, would you mind seeing ads at all on the site? The site's current finances are perfectly fine but a little extra income (at the urging of my staff) would possibly allow for more future options.

Second question is, the site's footer. How many of you scroll all the way to the bottom of the site and glance at our footer? I'm trying to revamp it into something better to either hold ads (as asked in question one) or maybe have some kind of twitter feed?

Any replies are welcomed and encouraged and all helpful replies will get 100 of our forum money.

If it's Adsense, it's probably best to only let guests see them. Making them visible to members who refresh the page many times a day in a short period of time can lead to them marking the traffic as false impressions, especially if your (DS, you) activity on the forum contributes to viewing the ads.

The footer is one of the worst places to put ads. It is an alright spot to put affiliating sites tho.

Ads should be placed in non-annoying areas that are high on the page for visibility. You can't let ads have a negative impact on content either and you'll have to be stricter with the content you have on the site because ad networks (if you're using one) have a lot of rules you must abide to.

Anyway, I normally only scroll to the bottom of a site (the footer, not scrolling down to view content) to find a description of it or a contact link.

Well i will say this as a forum owner. Yes ads are good and have it open to every one, but have it were members can offer a donation to remove them from seeing it. there's no sense having ads were people will not see them that defeats the purpose. You do not have to ask for much even ifs a $1.00.

I am sorry to say every one starts a forum or website to make money bottom line. So yes ad ads and have it for every one to see and if you do not want to see it then donate ;-).

Very little do i scroll to the bottom of any site but mine :).

allot of website do add ads to earn income that will keep the website running and also it helps other people that are owners to exchange ad banners. It's up to the admin if he wants to earn income that will support the website or maybe the cash goes back into the members for giveaways and fun games. The footer looks cool and maybe an idea to chnage the links and the layout around and don't ad the advert right on the footer just above it or under the footer

Marc Marc I won't bother with adsense, I've been looking at a service called CPM star
In that case, just look out for scam networks and questionable ad serving (eg. malware). Also, be sure to test out the loading time of the script. If it takes ages to load an ad, ditch them because it'll only hurt your search engine ranking.

CPM star is alright but how much would that helps

I don't usually scroll to the bottom of the page.. I didn't even know there was a Gaming Latest Youtube, etc.. but other than that I never really go to the bottom. I normally navigate at the top. You could also do some sort of paid advertising for members as well to buy ad space. I know in the future I would gladly buy adspace (not for a forum) for content I work on. As long as the ads don't clutter the hell out of the site, they don't bother me if they are being used by a site I enjoy. Other sites of course, I use Adblock.

I would suggest the header place or a button for ads. after all, you would get the attention of various viewers there.

I think ads on a forum are such a common thing that 99% of users won't be bothered.

Ads in footer is kind of pointless, in forums they work well to go right under the first post of each thread.

Personally, I use Adblock. I don't find forced advertisement to be pleasing and that's why you won't see it on any of my forums. Maybe I'm getting old but I much prefer the old ways. Systems where you asked your users for donations and maybe gave them some trivial kickbacks like username colors, etc. If I enjoy a community and it needs help then I have no issue helping it at most of times. I think most people prefer such ways rather forceful ads.

For yourself, being against ads, what kind of things would make you donate to the forum or purchase a premium membership? What kind of pricing would you suggest?

As far as the ads go, you could let members have the option of contributing to the site in exchange for maybe a premium or v.i.p. membership and one of the perks of that would be to have the ads removed. Either way, you'd get a little extra money for the site.

On the second question, I agree with Marc. I think that ads should be placed in a spot that is a high visibility spot but is not quite so annoying to your members.

Well, I don't mind ads, though as an Adblock user, I never really notice them anyway.

As for the footer, I guess that's also where our possible affiliation deal could be placed?
