The videos you scroll past in your Facebook News Feed are about to include a new element: Sound.

Facebook’s autoplay videos will soon play with the sound on, the company announced Tuesday, an expansion of a test the social network started last fall. As you scroll through News Feed on a mobile device, the sound will “fade in and out” as you come across videos, according to a company blogpost.

There are a few caveats. Sound will only play if you already have the sound turned on for your phone; if your phone is in silent mode, for example, the videos won’t play with sound. You can also opt out of this whole thing in settings if it bothers you.

It’s a small but notable change for the company as it pushes even further into video. As CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained on the company’s last earnings call, Facebook wants to be a video destination, not just a feed that also happens to have videos.

Auto-play sound can be an annoying feature for people who are sensitive to sound. But, there is an opt-out setting, so this is not a big deal for most people who know how to opt-out or set their phone to silent mode.

I like auto-play sound since it save me time by not having to turn on the sound.

rest in peace those who use earbuds on the wrong volume setting or those at work who shouldn't be having this stuff up with sound on.

As long as it is an opt out thing, I'm not fussed... though please bring back Latest Posts as the default tab... and get rid of autoplaying the next video

With the crappy videos already shared on Facebook this makes the feature even more annoying. Auto-play drives me mad and eats through data on my phone - must remember to turn this setting off.

IMO this should be an opt in and not opt out: Why should I need to change a setting to turn something off? With that said I no longer use facebook, not as useful today as it used to be.

Yeah at least an opt-in to the sound part of it, the videos automatically playing should be disabled over mobile data and then should have an opt-out for other times.

Honestly I think that it should be opt-in at all times, what happens if you hotspot your desktop to your phone like I do?

I'll be switching that setting off immediately. The last thing I need is some random video with sex sounds in the background playing out loudly while I'm on the bus or at home

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of this. It is ok for me because I have unlimited data on my phone, but it might be an issue for others.
