While selling benefits of “telework” to others, IBM forces relocation in stealth layoff.

IBM, one of the earliest companies to embrace the concept of employees working en masse from home or small satellite offices, has informed thousands of employees that it's time to return to the mothership—or find a new job. As The Wall Street Journal reports, this week is the deadline for remote employees—who make up as much as 40 percent of IBM's workforce—to decide whether to move or leave.

This is unfortunate for IBM remote workers who can't work at IBM's office because they live too far away from the office, they don't own a car or can't access other forms of transportation to get to work, or can't afford a home or rent a home near the IBM office.

I remember when Yahoo told remote workers to work in the office, and now Yahoo had to sell itself to Verizon.

Hrmm, IBM has a big office building in my town so I wonder what that means for them? And why the cut back? Were people not doing their jobs right?

According to the Article, IBM is having money problems where they are not making enough money.

IBM company's revenues continue to fall, and the policy move is essentially a way of laying off thousands of employees who can't afford on their current IBM salaries to move to a major metropolitan area like New York.

I bet, there is a chance some IBM workers will still be at a risk for losing their jobs if they decided to work in a office since IBM's revenue is falling, so IBM may not have the money to hire them for very long if the revenue does not increase.

IBM can end up spending more money telling workers to work at the office because having thousands of more office workers in buildings will cause IBM to use more money to pay for electricity, water, gas, office supplies, and internet bandwidth. IBM may need to hire more security guards, maintenance workers, cleaners, and technical support workers if suddenly thousands of remote workers are forced to work in the IBM offices.

Huh, must be in debt from the Watson project, guess selling it out to H&R block didn't save them any.

IBM sold their desktop computer, laptop, and server business to Lenovo which is a Chinese company.

IBM may of earned more money just running their desktop, laptop, and server businesses themselves instead of selling them off for a low price to Lenovo which is now one of the most popular computer makers in the world because Lenovo can now use the ThinkPad branding which is popular with many older computer users.

At one time, IBM computers were more popular than Apple computers.

Shame they did that, I think they could still make very quality computers.

I agree IBM can still make good computers. IBM also used to make one of the best mechanical keyboards for typing, and the keyboards last a long time. They also made monitors in the past.

Lenovo may also be hurting IBMs brand when some buyers may think that IBM products are not as good when some Lenovo PC shipped with the Superfish malware according to Some Lenovo laptops shipped with preinstalled malware , so Lenovo shipping their PC with malware may of hurt IBM reputation because a lot of Lenovo PC still use the ThinkPad brand and look like IBM PCs which used to belong to IBM before it got sold to Lenovo.

I think there are still a lot of buyers who want to buy high quality laptops, desktop, servers, monitors and mechanical keyboards rather than trendy tech like Apple computers, and laptops.

That's unfortunate. There are a lot of perks working at home full time. You get to spend more time with family, friends, and even pets; you also don't have to waste time going to commutes and additional expenses that come with it. So I'm not surprised people would rather stay home with work rather than go to dreary offices and deal with people they don't even like.
