I think a dress code where students don't wear trashy or inappropriate clothing would be good enough. School uniforms can cost a lot of money compared to buying regular T-shirts, sweaters, pants, and running shoes from Amazon, eBay, Costco or directly from the factory where you can buy more clothes for less money, so parents don't need to spend as much for clothes compared to buying expensive uniforms. A lot of kids also wear their brothers or sisters old clothing as their siblings clothing become too small when they grow more during their teen years where they can grow very tall.

Plus, schools are short on cash most of the time, so schools can't afford to buy shirts, and pants for all the poor kids who can't afford uniforms, and the money can be better spent on other things like books, school supplies, or better computers to replace the older and broken computers.

Doing this sort of thing never helps the kid though. If there is a dress code in school it'll just make kids go nuts when school is out.

A friend of mine went to an all-boy schools which had uniforms. He said there were a lot of fights in the school. I think one of the reasons for the fights were the uniforms because the kids who wear them are probably not very happy wearing them, and some of the trouble makers probably did not like school.

A lot of workers like security guards, fast food workers, and Discount stores like Wal-Mart who wear uniforms are generally less happy than jobs like computer programmers, graphic designers, and gardeners with a dress code of sweaters, t-shirts, pants, and shorts because sometimes uniforms are uncomfortable, and they need to buy their own uniforms with their own money.

Reading the article though, the students are unhappy about the dress code.
I guess, there needs to be a new dress code where the dress code does not cause students to sweat too much from the summer heat during the hot summer days because they are forced to wear too much clothing which cover too much skin in the summer, but there is enough clothing to keep them from exposing too much skin.

There is always home schooling, online school, and alternative schools for students who don't like the dress code.

I thought the school went overboard calling the police to stop a student protest about the dress code according to the article since student protesting a dress code does not seem to need police to get involve to stop the protest.

I also found the banning of earplugs, headphones, and wallet chains kind of over the top since a lot of people use earplugs, and headphones during lunch, and a lot of school computers don't have speakers, or you can't use them because it is located in the library, so the only way to hear sound from a computer is with a pair of headphones or earplugs style headphones.

Wallet chains are useful for keeping your wallet and keys from falling out of your pants.

I think this is part of the entitlement mentality. School needs rules and in itself having a dress code is fine. However they need to keep in touch with reality. Some banned things are ridiculous. It is not new.

While I like kids don't just take things and dare to think on their own, It saddens me their approach. I'd have way more support for well dressed students still getting in trouble due the ridiculous rules than the swanky dressed up ones saying it's my business how I dress. Yes, you choose that as others can choose to accordingly deny you entry if you knowingly dress to break them.

Where I live school uniform is compulsory if any child turns up in non school uniform they are sent home to change and are punished for it. School uniform can be really expensive and I sometimes wish they would drop the whole school uniform rule and allow kids to go in clothes that are smart and not as you state trashy. My kids are always complaining about how they hate wearing uniform and why can't they just wear normal clothes. I remember when I was at school I couldn't wait to get out of my uniform especially on hot days as it was so uncomfortable.

Smart clothes and non trashy clothes seems like a better option in my opinion.

In the country where I live there are uniforms for kids in school, pre-schools, mid-schools and high-schools. I think is better because you don't wear out your regular clothes. I think this is the plus point about wearing uniforms at school.

They do have uniforms here in the UK.

That said, is it a good thing? Well, I guess so. Poorer kids aren't disadvantaged based on what brand their clothing is, and students do look less trashy than they might otherwise.

But at the same time... there is stuff to like about the US approach too. I'd certainly have preferred it as a kid if I was growing up in the states.

My high school always has and still works like this: Every day is uniform, except on sports day when we can wear whatever sports running shoes we want and then a set school sports gear. Then, at the end of each term there is a civvies day for the grade who had the least demerits for the term.

This way, each grade has an incentive to work together and behave because everyone loves to have a civvies day. When it was first introduced, the amount of kids misbehaving and getting detention decreased drastically. I think another good way of finding out which system works best is to compare countries whose schooling system is usually no-uniform to countries that are the opposite and gain analytics to find out which is best.

I think occasional, incentivized no-uniform days with uniform on most days makes the most sense. Kids get used to it eventually anyway.

I've been following this story:

Students Rebel Against Dress Code by Wearing Crop Tops and Cutoffs

For awhile now, and simply put I do believe some kids are dressing trashy. Even if they think they can get away with it in school, they won't in a place of work unless said place is a strip club.

Your thoughts?

As someone who went to Catholic schools for 12 years that enforced strict dress codes, I want to speak up about this. I understand they want to keep kids from dressing inappropriately, but at schools like this, it is very easy to be treated like a stripper just because you wear shorts, not even short shorts, leggings, yoga pants, tank tops, etc. I remember one day it was like 27 degrees Celsius at my school, and they were sending people home just for wearing shorts. They weren't even dressed inappropriately. We couldn't wear regular stuff that you could wear anywhere else, even church. I was so glad to get away from that. I'm not saying dress codes shouldn't be enforced, but I think teachers shouldn't be prioritizing measuring girls' skirts to make sure they're not 2 inches above the knee over and actual, I don't know...education. Girls got more flack than boys too because they didn't 'want to arouse the male teachers.

I don't think anyone should wear school uniforms. It takes away people's individuality. People who complain about strict dress code should be glad they can wear almost whatever they want because they'll hate it even more if they have to wear the same thing everyday.

What if it's the same tacky thing every day? My high school teacher's son said we all looked liked middle schoolers.

I grew up wearing uniforms on both elementary and high school. When I reached college, I had no idea what to wear or what the hell fashion is all about since all my life I had my clothes decided for me. To me I think it's better money-wise for a uniform since you don't have to spend much and everyday has a specific uniform, but I also want the freedom to wear whatever I like. It's better decision making, and you have to plan out your laundry and all that if you want your clothes to be there in time. I don't think clothes are too trashy, I think it's just a generation thing. Not my generation, not my problem.

Yes. Schools should have uniforms. It makes people feel that they are all equal and you don't have to worry about kids wearing inappropriate clothes.

Also, for kids, they don't have to spend too much time on deciding what to wear.
