What are your thoughts every time the media or some big government person blames violent video games for recent incidents?

I think it's just free advertising for the companies who make such games.
It's phychology 101; if you say "don't think about an elephant", what do you think about? An elephant!

Violent games are forever popular among gamers (which means huge money is being made), and sometimes even help governments recruit new soldiers.
That's why I think the only reason they speak out 'against' violent games is in fact to promote them.

I really hate when they blame violent video games because they make every video game sound like a problem. I don't hate violent video games because they're violent, but I don't play them because they're not for me. I don't like the thought of shooting other people, even if it is just a video game. That's why I prefer Halo, you shoot aliens. But if other people like it, then the government shouldn't be allowed to tell us what we can and can't play.

I'm tired of people blaming entertainment as the root of all society's issues.

It's not guns, games, porn, music, tv, movies, comic books, etc... that are causing problems. Those are just scapegoats that ignorant people want to use to distract people from the real issues. The ones that require actual hard choices and difficult ways to fix.

In truth the real issues at play are often mental healthcare deficits and unstable individuals.
Sometimes it has to do with interdepartmental communications too. (Like that guy who was dishonourably discharged from the military, which means essentially he's denied ever owning firearms again, but the military either never reported that fact to the FBI or it was slow getting processed by the FBI. )

With this latest shooter, he had a history of problems (there were signs that he should not have been allowed guns and needed help) but they were ignored. He was reported of course, but no one ever followed up on them. If they had followed up with him and got him into proper treatment maybe all those people would still be alive.

And because this invariably comes up... gun control is not the answer. Gun control is veiled as making things safer but the regulations pushed don't affect the criminal element. Proposed laws only ever target law abiding citizens.

Maybe some TV news and newspaper stories blame video games, so more people will watch TV and read newspapers instead of playing games. TV news and newspapers regular watcher/reader population is becoming smaller because of newer forms of media like online blogs, online videos, video games, and ebooks which traditional media may see new forms of entertainment as a threat to their business' earnings.

It's a silly scapegoat thing to try and crush rising media channels from traditional media sources or people with interests in traditional media. I've got to the point where it doesn't bother me personally anymore I just ignore it.

blaming any inanimate object is an awful strawman. I've played many violent games and fired a couple guns. The real name of the problem is Societal Decay

Tons of people play video games everywhere all the time, now more so than ever. I do not believe that forms of entertainment cater to potential violent behavior.

Because first of all I don’t see tons of killers everywhere out in the streets, and as I say, so many people play games. Secondly violence, strife and crime have existed centuries before any video game was made, so video games certainly do not "create" violent tendencies.

Banning games is never going to solve psychological issues, it's not even cutting leaves instead of the root, it's just feeding a mob demanding something to blame. It happened to rock music and violent movies, inevitable then that it should occur with games.

It's like parents blaming gadgets because their child addicted to it. The on who should be blamed are themselves, because they didn't guide their child.
