Not sure if many people here pay attention to the forum world, but InvisionFree and Zetaboards have both been bought out by Tapatalk Groups, which is not as great forum hosting. In a similar news, Icyboards will also be shutting down as well.

At this time it means that anyone on these hostings somehow have to get their data off and find a new hosting. Which for free the only really best options are either mybb or Jcink, which if I had to recommend one is Jcink where most users seem to be fleeing towards.

I think Jcink would be a good option since I joined some jcink forums in the past.

Self-hosting your forum and using your own domain name could be a good option if you can afford it, or have enough members who are willing to donate some money, or are willing to pay a few dollars per year for a paid membership.

Free forum hosting is something what I did decades ago, speed of the servers were terrifying, unremovable ads are everywhere, had often gave your forum a bad reputation.

MyBB isn't a host, it's just software.

It's kind of a shame these services are getting shut down. Tbh I've seen plenty of these free forums last longer than the paid ones, despite what the people at FP tell you.

This site uses paid software and I’m sure on a paid host, so unless the host decides to delete everything without telling anyone, or the host’s storage array gets nuked, it should be fine.

This site is relying on some hosting guy, I only know it's on a server of his, but that's all.
And since it's his own server, no content can be nuked unless they forget to pay their bill at one point.

I read a few reviews of of some web host costumers having debt collectors hired by their web hosts trying to collect hosting fees if they don't pay, or cancel and remove their credit card or Paypal account which is linked to their web hosting account.

Some web hosts ask for your e-mail, phone number, and address, so they may contact you to pay if you are late on payments, or force you to pay if you never officially cancel your account by phoning them to cancel.

Wouldn't that count as a scam company?

Yes, I think it is a scam-like behavior. But, the web hosting subscriber may of agreed to the "Terms of Service" which may say customers need to officially cancel their account by calling them to cancel their hosting.

I think some digital subscription based companies like ISP, cell phone service and TV service in North America require users to call the company to cancel an account before it is officially canceled. If users don't pay their bill, and did not cancel their account, the company can send a debt collector to collect the debt which the costumers owe the company.

ack, my bad ^^; and true, free can do as well as paid.

Don't know much about the forum world.... so are we going to move out?

We run Xenforo on our own hosting, so this event doesn't affect us.
