Nothing for me this week. If I didn't already have Sonic Mania, I'd get Sonic Mania Plus, but to be honest, looking back on it, Sonic Mania is just okay. I much prefer 3D Sonic games to 2D ones.

Read on Kalypso Media has bought the rights to commandos game IP, hopefully they are going to make a new and excellent commandos game like the classic ones.

Kalypso Media has announced that it has secured all rights to the highly-acclaimed fan-favourite gaming IP, Commandos. Commandos is a stealth-oriented real-time tactics game series set in World War 2, and Kalypso will re-release some older games to current-gen platforms and will start working on a brand new title.

Ignacio Pérez, founder of Pyro Studios, said:

“We have been looking for a suitable partner for the continuation of our products and brands for a long time. Kalypso has great expertise and experience with rebooting well-known titles, and we are delighted to have our IP in such good hands.”

Simon Hellwig, founder and managing director of Kalypso, added:

“We have great respect for what the Pyro Studios team have accomplished and created throughout the history of the studio. We see it as our responsibility to revive and further develop these beloved games for fans around the world. Of course, this will include the development of a completely new game for all platforms, but also an extensive adaptation of the existing titles for contemporary technologies and platforms. We’re incredibly excited about the opportunities, and will begin speaking to potential development studios in the near future.”

Just read more on From software's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice,
from dual shockers and PS blog:

Sekiro-755x425.jpg

"If we’re going to do something with ninjas, there are two key areas that are relevant: the Edo period and the Sengoku period. For context, the Sengoku period was a bit earlier than the Edo period. We ended landing on the Sengoku period [because it] was dirtier — it was grittier and bloodier. It had more of a feel of the type of world we’d want to create…"

“There are two key things about battle in Sekiro. In combat, one of the key aspects that’s important in this game is the violence of the clashing of swords. The other thing is the verticality and dynamic movement that you’re allowed.

That dynamism is in the combat, as well. There are lots of different ways to approach a battle, such as stealth, or using your arm tools. Attacking from above, for example. Some of your ninja tools can take advantage of an enemy’s weakness, as well. Or, if you want, you can just go straight in with your sword.

There are lots of different things you can do that will help you in battle. The game is designed in such a way that even if you’re not insanely good at the game, you can figure out how to get through it if you think about it and play it smart.”

Miyazaki-san also talked about the resurrection mechanic in the game, explaining that ninjas are different from knights because they take more risks and are more vulnerable. One screwup can result in death, and having to run back every single time isn’t good for the tempo of the game. Being able to resurrect on the spot (which won’t be available every single time) helps to mitigate that, and allows “that riskier edge of the knife type gameplay.”

Another important factor in the idea is that it allows players to kill ingeniously, as a ninja is so resourceful that he can even use his own death as a weapon. The story itself is also focused on the concept of resurrection.

That being said, Miyazaki-san is clear in mentioning that resurrection was not introduced to make the game easier. As a matter of fact, it can make it harder, because it allows the developers to push riskier combat situations where the player can die at any moment.

The game is balanced around this, and the presence of the resurrection mechanic does not mean that players won’t be afraid of death.

why 3D over 2D?
To be fair, my first Sonic game was a 3D Sonic game so I think it has something to do with that. The 2D ones aren't that bad, but I'd rather play Sonic Heroes or Sonic 06. Though, when it comes to Mario I like both, but the 2D games hold more of a charm for me, which is why I never get sick of the New Super Mario Bros series.

you remind me of the people who only like 3D mario because SM64 was their first :p

Just read this, Germany's new video game law, pre-ordering without any certain release date is not allowed now in germany. So no more "coming soon".

From dualshockers:

Germany has introduced a new ruling which requires a confirmed release date on products in order to allow pre-ordering. The ruling came from the Higher Regional Court in Munich following a court case surrounding the pre-order sales of smartphones. This was brought to light through a customer protection claim involving Media Merkt — originally with them enabling pre-orders on smartphones that don’t have firm release dates.

However, this ruling doesn’t stop at the distribution of smartphones. Instead, it extends to all items — including video games. This essentially abolishes the concept of pre-ordering games that are simply labeled as “coming soon,” a practice that the video game industry uses on a regular basis. Games must now feature a latest possible window of release in order to abide by the new ruling.

Speaking on the subject Wolfgang Schuldzinski, CEO of Düsseldorf Consumer, said:

“When consumers order goods on the internet, providers must specify by when the goods are delivered.”

The pre-order market for gaming has become a focal point for publishers in recent years with pre-orders adding the ability for players to gain many exclusive bonuses in exchange for paying for the game upfront. These can span from in-game currency to DLC, or even detailed psychical statues of characters that come packaged with the games themselves. On the tail-end of E3, we have already seen a wealth of games with uncertain release dates; namely CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk2077, which is available for pre-order in the US.

With the pre-order market removed, this could heavily impact the way games are sold in Germany — or even with the industry at large. It will be interesting to see if gaming companies globally now back away from the “Coming Soon” term to match regulations for the relatively large EU market.

Just saw new Saga: Scarlet grace – Hiiro no Yabou trailer, looks nice. English version is planned ( PlayStation 4, Switch, PC, mobile).

Sony just revealed a new Arc the lad game, but it's a mobile game, dang what a let down.

ArcTheLad-ds1-670x350-constrain.jpg

Today Sony Interactive Entertainment’s mobile branch ForwardWorks announced a new Arc The Lad game for smart devices.

The game will be an RPG (it’s defined “RPG of Light and Sound” bringing back the original catchphrase used for the old titles), and it’ll bring back together the original staff, with planning and game design handled by the series’ creator Toshiro Tsuchida. Norihiko Yonesaka will write the story, Eiji Koyama, Ryuichi Kunisue, Hiroshi Hayashi will work on the art, and T-Square’s Masahiro Andoh will take care of the audio.

再始動=restart

Doesn't sound like something very new to me.

Just read some more on DMC5 from siliconera/famitsu:

devil_may_cry_5_e3_201810_thumb.jpg

Devil May Cry 5’s key developers shared the latest on the upcoming action game in a big feature in this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine. The devs talked about balancing photorealism with action, and plenty more.

  • The goal for Devil May Cry 5 is photorealism, and they’re working on a consistent 60 fps for a high-speed battle feel that you can only get from Devil May Cry.
  • As for the graphics, Capcom is not only 3D scanning people, but they’re also scanning clothing.
  • Previously, the focus was on response so players were able to motion cancel, but for Devil May Cry 5 it’ll take the input but it won’t skip through animation.
  • The developers say that if you could do the same thing (motion skipping) as before but with the photorealistic quality of Devil May Cry 5, it would look strange. This is something Capcom is calling “the uncanny valley of action.”
  • For example, when you turn around you’ll feel the weight behind the character movement. However, this brings another problem of having a slower response. The team struggled in finding a way to keep the responsiveness while giving it a more photorealistic appearance.
  • Capcom wanted a Nero that is at the top of his game in body and mind, so they went with a setting of a few years after Devil May Cry 4.
  • Dante hasn’t gone wild for no reason.
  • The third character you see in the key visual (top image) is a playable character.
  • The relation with Nico and her tattoos is a secret.
  • Capcom aims to share new info and have Devil May Cry 5 be playable at Gamescom 2018.
  • The background music changes as you pull off combos. For example it’ll change to a B melody then to a C melody to hype things up.
  • That means unless you do something cool, you might get stuck on a repeat of the A melody.
  • Capcom’s goal is to make Devil May Cry 5 the peak of action games in the Heisei period (1989 to ~April 2019)
