Researchers in California have developed a device that can monitor your workout progress and generate power from your perspiration.

Dr. Joseph Wang and his team at UC San Diego showed off their invention at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Francisco.

It works by measuring a chemical called lactate that is naturally present in sweat. The more intense the workout, the more lactate your body produces.

The sensor also strips electrons from lactate to generate a small electrical current. Wang hopes the device can eventually power a smart watch or heart rate monitor.

This is great for people who lives in hot places since they can use sweat to power their smartphone, tablets, and watches to save money on electricity. I can also see this kind of tech being useful for handheld consoles like the 3DS and PSP since they probably use the same amount of power as a smartphone, so sweat can power a handheld for unlimited power as long as you are sweating.

Ugh....I don't want something like that.

I suppose it can be handy for some people but just not for me.

I think a sweat power cell phone can be useful if you need to charge your phone, but you are away from a power plug for plugging in a charger, and don't own a power bank, or your power bank is empty.

I think most people sweat to stay cool to prevent our body from overheating, so using sweat to generate power can be useful rather than just letting sweat cover our electronics like smartphone, game controllers, and smart watches. It does sound gross using sweat to generate electricity, but most things like keyboards, mouse, smartphones, and game controllers have a little sweat drip on it in a hot day, or if the heater in your room is turned up to a high temperature.

I know some sweaty people who will love this feature, granted I wouldn't use it.

A phone for SpongeBob lol

People who drive in the summer by driving a car with no air conditioning could find sweat charging useful at charging their smartwatch, cell phone, etc because their always sweaty because their car has no air conditioning, and opening the windows does not provide enough air cooling to cool their car if they live in a hot country like Mexico.

I think swear charging feature is good to have in cell phones for emergencies since users can run a lot to sweat more or sit next to a hot object like fire to sweat faster to charge a cell phone battery, so they have enough power % on their battery to phone the police to rescue them by following their cell phone's signal location.

So Gyms will have more side hustle eh :p

Anyway this is good for the environment. :p

I agree this would be good for the environment. Gyms can use the power generated from sweat to help charge batteries to help power their LED lights, LCD black and white clocks, and low powered laptops and calculators which don't use a lot of electricity.

Free electricity from sweat may convince more lazy people to go out and run to generate enough power to power their cell phone.
