PS5 lead system architect Mark Cerny has shown off some of the internal components of the next-generation PlayStation - which he is technically not currently calling PlayStation 5 - which will include a high-spec solid state drive, a GPU capable of supporting ray tracing, will support PS4 backwards compatibility, and won't be download-only.

In a meeting with Wired, Cerny also explained that the console would definitely not be released in 2019, and demonstrated why this is a true next-generation machine, rather than a PS4 upgrade in the vein of the PS4 Pro.

Cerny explained that the console's CPU is a variant of the AMD Ryzen third generation, and that its GPU is a custom version of Radeon's Navi line. That GPU is capable of ray tracing, a high-performance graphical technique with some incredible results. As you'd expect, the console will also support 8K displays.

Cerny also showed off the power of the console's new solid state drive (SSD) with a practical demo. According to Wired, fast-travelling between locations in Insomniac's Spider-Man on a PS4 Pro took 15 seconds. Using a next-gen PlayStation devkit, the same action took 0.8 seconds.

We also finally get confirmation that the console will still accept physical media, rather than taking a download-only or streaming-only form. That ties into another aspect - it will be backwards-compatible with PS4 games, although we don't know if it goes any further back through the generations than that. The current PSVR model will also be compatible with the new console.

Cerny also covers the fact that the new AMD CPU will allow for a 3D audio with no extra hardware. "With the next console," he explained, "the dream is to show how dramatically different the audio experience can be when we apply significant amounts of hardware horsepower to it.”

The PS5 does look like a powerful game console. Hopefully, the games for the PS5 won't be very expensive because it would be more expensive for game makers to create 4K and 8K games.

Sounds cool. But I'm still sticking to PC gaming. Esp. for complex MMOs.

hopefully they put in a good SSD into it.

I think SSD can be somewhat risky since they have a limited numbers of storage writes before the chips break down. SSD sometimes loses files when they are not powered ON for 7 days or longer according to SSDs can lose data in as little as 7 days without power - ExtremeTech Having to reinstall the OS and download and install games from disc or the internet after a long power outage, or the console being unplugged for many weeks or months can be very annoying.

I feel MMO style games would be best with PC because people tend to use text chat a lot, and MMO games sometimes have a lot of button commands, features, and gameplay which is best played with a keyboard and mouse.

Seems like some pretty interesting technology behind it and I'm happy to hear about backcompat. Hopefully thats for physical and digital games. If it is, I might upgrade just to get the higher resolutions of the games I have (like a Pro would) and also get the new games.

I can't wait for the backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 4. I was hoping for compatibility with all previous PS consoles but I guess it's not for this console.

Damn, didn't know that (the 7 day thing).

I hope for digital as well, I got a few digital PSN PS1 games still sitting on my PS3 to be played.

So will the PS5 do 8K??
Cerny mentioned it will support 8K graphics, so in theory it will do 8k. How well will it perform in 8K mode though, I wonder. Not enough data for 8K speculations yet I guess...

Same. I'll be perfectly fine with 4K considering 8K will be useless for most things. Just got a brand new 4K TV and my normal PS4 gameplay is looking a bit dodgy so hopefully the PS5 can come out soon.

Hopefully, updates and patches for PS5 games won't be many hundred GBs in size because of the higher quality graphics and other files which will be larger in file size.
