A helicopter carrying President Ebrahim Raisi of Iran crashed in the northwestern part of the country, the interior minister said Sunday, sparking a massive rescue operation to a mountainous area shrouded in heavy fog.

Rescue teams haven’t been able to locate the aircraft, the minister said, without providing any information on the president’s condition. Also aboard the helicopter was the foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, state TV said.

If the 63-year-old president is dead or incapacitated, the crash would deprive Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei of a longtime ally and potential successor as Tehran angles for regional dominance through armed militias that are fighting the U.S. and Israel.

Drones, dogs and search and rescue teams were being used to try to locate the helicopter as fog and bad weather made the work difficult, the interior minister, Ahmad Vahidi, said on Iranian state television.

“On Sunday afternoon, a helicopter carrying the President, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and several companions unfortunately had an accident in the Varzaghan region of East Azerbaijan province,” said a statement from the foreign ministry.

Raisi’s security detail and crew members were also flying with him, along with the governor of the East Azerbaijan province and a senior local cleric.

Iran government spokesman Ali Bahadori-Jahromi said at 8 p.m. in Tehran, about five hours after the crash, that there was no news on the status of the passengers, given the remote location of the site and inclement weather.

The president got no power though, so the entire tension in the middle east won't be effected. As long as Ali Khamenei is alive, like Russia currently is in the hands of Putin.

Yeah the Supreme Leader is the one who runs Iran, the President is just a title.

The Question would say it's a one big global Conspiracy lol

Many Iranians are happy with his death:

"Aside from being one of the most conservative presidents Iran has ever seen, Raisi rose to prominence in the Islamic Republic through the brutal judicial system where he was a member of the notorious ‘Panel of Death,’ sending thousands of political prisoners to the gallows. There’s a reason why he earned the moniker ‘Butcher of Tehran," said Jonathan Harounoff, Israel and Iran journalist and analyst.

"Widespread bureaucratic corruption, woeful economic mismanagement, sky-high inflation, high unemployment. Not to mention tight censorship and severe punishment or death for political dissent," said Harounoff.

Women's rights activist Masih Alinejad declared today as "World Helicopter Day" and said this is "the only crash in history where everyone is worried if someone survived."

Too many Dictators have ruled over Iran. It got worse after the collapse of the Iranian Monarchy years back with the extremist Khomeini. The guy practically used religion as an "excuse" to strengthen his dictatorship even further. Calling Iran a Republic but all is controlled by the supreme leader alone. Back when it was still monarchy Iran's relationship with the west was better, Iran was allowed to purchase the F-4 Phantoms and F-14 Tomcat USAF fighter planes, and their Air Force is still flying those old fighters nowadays.
