Yep I had to rebuy a PS4 since my first one overheated. I also have two PS2 consoles, my wife's PS2 doesn't read CD rom or CDs and I don't have the skills to fix it currently so I bought another silver PS2 that reads all discs. Her PSP wasn't reading UMDs really anymore either so I got her another one. Also her PSOne stopped reading discs and I failed to replace the laser unit so we got another one instead. :V
I’ve replaced lasers in PS2’s, and it’s super easy. If you look up YouTube videos, you can see how easy it is.

I currently have no soldering skills so I couldn't do it lol. I have practice kits that I do need to get around to messing around with, then I'd be more confident replacing the laser unit. But right now, I would be afraid that I would mess it up somehow lol.
The only “soldering” you do is removing the anti-static solder blob on the outside. All you do is hold an iron and a wick to it and it’ll come off once it’s heated up. It takes zero skill lol. The blob will fall off before you can attempt melt the laser unit, so you have to intentionally do something to fuck it up lol.
Soldering is also a stupidly easy skill to learn. I taught myself how to do it at 14. The only skill is making your joints not look like shit, but if shit isn’t moving, then who cares how it looks?

I've been lucky to never have to repurchase any, but I know a lot of people who wore out their PS1 systems or had to replace PS2 due to not reading the disc.
