That $1,350 price point is really hard to justify when you look at what a custom built PC can offer at the same budget. The whole appeal of something like the Steam Machine was supposed to be convenience and value together, but at this price you are basically paying a premium just for the small form factor and SteamOS integration.
The comparison with PS5 makes it even harder to defend. A console at $499 with a strong exclusive library versus a compact PC at $1,350 with weaker GPU performance, most casual gamers will not even think twice.
If Valve had managed to keep it around $750 as originally planned it would have been a genuinely interesting option, but at this price the only real advantage left is the open platform and Steam library access, which is not enough for most people to stretch that far.
Has anyone here actually pre-ordered it at this price, or are most people waiting to see if Valve adjusts things down the line?
