Did you ever had issues using the N64 controller?

I thought it was ugly but if you hold it a certain way it's not uncomfortable. I also don't like that the joystick can easily break and most of the original controller's sticks drift now. It's not the worst controller, but it's not great either lol.

In my experience, the only people with controller stick issues was from those who had Mario Party. Also, the way you hold the controller varies by game.

My purple controller has bad stick drift, it was my cousins console originally and they only rented Mario Party once. I played a lot of Turok 2 and 3 on my n64 so maybe that's why the joystick has bad drift now. I'm right handed so I would use the c buttons as the d pad in Turok, my cousin was left handed so he would use the d pad.

Mine all still work fine

From what I remember, mine were always great and super hardy. I was pretty young, so I can't say I was obsessed with keeping everything perfect, but I don't recall any major problems. 3rd-party controllers, on the other hand, didn't go as well; I actually think that is why I still avoid 3rd-party controllers a lot of the time (although I am looking at my desk right now and the 3rd-party controller I use normally, so maybe I've lightened up on this over the years).
