No, I read up on it (for Cambodian New Year) and it has to do with it being the end of the harvesting season for farmers and they get to enjoy the fruits of their labor before the rainy season begins. New Year use to be decided by the Khmer Lunar Calender, but they've changed it over the years.
Well for Khmer(Cambodian) New Year there are 3 main days to be celebrated (even though it's usually celebrated for well over a week). Maha Songkran, Virak Wanabat, and T'ngai Leang Saka. It'll explain each day in different comments since I'm not sure how much text can fit in a single comment lol
They sound like boss enemies in an RPG. Like notorious Monsters in Final Fantasy 11 or something. "Maha Songkran spawns once every hour. Kill it to pop Virak Wanabat and T'ngai Leang Saka."
The first day, Maha Songkran, is to celebrate the end of the year and to also celebrate the beginning of the new one. (So it's still celebrating the new year lol) The second day, Virak Wanabat, is where people contribute to charity for the less fortunate. The third day, T'ngai Leang Saka, is where Buddhists clean the Buddha statues and their elders with perfumed water.
But it is still far past the NEW year. @.@ It should be New HARVEST if that is what they are celebrating, no? I'm still confused lol The terminology seems off to me still. Maybe it is a term in the Cambodian language that doesn't translate to English quite well?
For Maha Songkran, (explanation from wiki) "People dress up and light candles and burn incense sticks at shrines, where the members of each family pay homage to offer thanks for the Buddha's teachings by bowing, kneeling and prostrating themselves three times before his image. For good luck people wash their face with holy water in the morning, their chests at noon, and their feet in the evening before they go to bed."
For T'ngai Leang Saka, "Bathing the Buddha images is the symbol that water will be needed for all kinds of plants and lives. It is also thought to be a kind deed that will bring longevity, good luck, happiness and prosperity in life. By bathing their grandparents and parents, children can obtain from them best wishes and good advice for the future."
Ah, I didn't see your comment about the RPG thing or how it still being far past the NEW year. I couldn't help but laugh at your comment about the names being boss enemies lol And as for the celebration being far past the NEW year, well remember that at the beginning it was decided by the Khmer Lunar calender. Even though they've changed the way the start of the first day is determined it's still going by old traditions.
And yeah, the terminology could be because of an issue with translation. Also, it is pretty fun to watch and spend time at. Sometime in the afternoon I believe people dress up in different costumes and clothing and the walk around the temple playing music like a parade. Some people wear masks that look like the Buddha's guardian, and some of the women dress up in certain clothing to look like a group of special women (I can't remember what makes them special though haha).
lol Like I said, I'm not good at explaining. But in our culture and beliefs there a group of women who hold special meaning. Like deities I guess lol and in plays and whatnot women dress up as them.
Cambodia scares the hell out of me, war sex slave trades etc. When aunt went to Cambodia three of the women in their group got kidnaped from the same hotel no one saw anything...
Is it sad that what immediately went through my head was "I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for...
