I am having trouble wording this... umm.. okay. Here's an example. My boss, Raithgar, drops hundreds of dollars into our review site and it is all non-profit. He buys the equipment, firmware, and does all the programming needed just as you do. why? Because he wants to do it for fun. If we got donations, great, but we won't get angry if we can't make money (as we do not anyway) as it is our choice to do these reviews.

Problem is, sites eventually get pretty expensive. It'll cost a lot to upgrade the site's hosting in time, and at that point we'll need significant backing to break even.

Or in other words, it'll eventually cost a few hundred a year minimum. Forum licenses + renewals, capture card equipment, hosting... it adds up eventually.

Yeah, I understand that, but it is something that you (i mean the word you as a whole, I'm not singling you out) have to factor and consider before starting any type of website. Like me, for instance. I plan to maybe one day make some flash animations and web comics which I will voice things myself. If I get donations, cool. If not, I couldn't care less. It is my choice to buy the software needed to make them and I'm not going to cry if I don't turn a profit.

Capture cards shouldn't be something your viewers / fans should have to fund. If you are a LPer or a game reviewer or whatever, then it should come out of your pocket - otherwise don't use it. I think far too many people feel like they need to be spoon-fed money for crap that they shouldn't. I post reviews on this site, right? buying the cartridges costs me money. Should I be payed by those who read my reviews to cover the costs of my games?

The point is though, a lot of the time these sites and people need the ad revenue to avoid bankrupting themselves. Heck, it probably costs the equivalent to someone's salary to keep the likes of Serebii.net or Zelda Universe or whatever online.

Besides, look at it this way, there are whole companies run whose business is running websites and forums and what not. Would they be happy if their subject took away their ad revenue? Besides, if you buy a game, you own the game and should be allowed to do whatever with it. The fact people don't fight for this right is why the world is going to hell recently.

We, in America, do fight for this right. It is currently in the courts of California pertaining to "legal right to jailbreak a console". If it passes modifications and custom firmware will be legal. The same judge already legalized jailbreaking cell phones on the same grounds as you just described; "we bought it".

I actually e-mailed Serebii.net out of curiosity as I didn't see a donation area or any pop-up advertisements funding their site. This is what they replied with:

"The site essentially non-profit, yeah. Any revenue made by the ads goes to server costs and any surplus goes into a backup fund for situations which warrant it such as needing an emergency server and situations such as that.

Which, now, I have to ask. Is there a place to donate to THIS forum, or is it all ad revenue from links and stuff other than outside of your own wallet (which I am certain is most of it)?

Serious? There's a donation thing right at the top.

Maybe it is donations are for moderators only to submit?

Hm, perhaps. Pretty sure it was previously accessible to everyone though.

It could also be a EU thing. I mean, I don't know if you are in the U.S as I am fairly certain that 'stockfillerton' is not a real place anywhere (even looked it up to be certain lol). Either way, you answered my question. Thank you. I now know there IS (sometimes) a donation feature on this forum.

Huh... odd. I've never seen that since I joined, so it had to be before the last week of January when it got changed. Maybe when the shoutbox got changed to chatroom?

Huh, never mind, that post is dated days before I joined. Hmm... and Sorry Nin for highjacking this status. I seriously apologize.
