A prominent school safety speaker has advocated the imposition of a 10-day moratorium on video game play and television viewing by students, reports the Grand Forks Herald.

Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, author, retired military man and longtime critic of video game violence, made the remarks during a keynote presentation to North Dakota school officials yesterday.

As he typically does in his speeches, Grossman linked violent video games with school shootings:

QUOTE [Grossman] described, in chilling detail, school massacres at Columbine High... the Red Lake Indian Reservation in Minnesota and Virginia Tech. Just as graphically, he conjured the brutality of video games such as “Grand Theft Auto†and “Manhunt.â€

Grossman, an expert on school violence, went on to trace a connection between the two, complete with brain scans and a study of juvenile murderers. And he pitched a singular idea to gathered educators – a 10-day television, movie and video game “detoxâ€...

“This is not business as usual,†he said. “This is our world coming unglued. This is our society coming unhinged.â€

can't these guys get the hint it's not the games but the kids?!

Games dont make a killer.
Killers play the games.

If someone is playing GTA/Manhunt, they obviously like that type of game: The gory violence, the shooting, and the killing and crimes. A game doesnt change someone into a murderer. Playing it just inspires them to go out and act it because they were already sick-minded people in the first place.

Yeah but you know these people will do anything to blame and get rid of games, i've played games since i was 5 and my first game was Mortal Kombat, yet i never wanted to go out and rip somebodie's heart out. These kids are born mental and sick in the head and just because they play games when the commit the crime, means that the game made the kid do it. Man some people are such idiots, its the kids and the parents fault, not the game.

It might be a good idea for kids with poor self-controll, but not a good idea for kids who get their homework done, have a job, or are well behaved.

I'm so sick of hearing this crap. Its mostly the parents fault because they're the ones stupid enough to buy the game, or not teach them to do what they see in the game itself.

I agree. I also lame the teens since most 15-17 year olds should know better then to play games instead of bathing, homework, sleeping, etc.
