Blizzard’s World of Warcraft is one of the older MMORPGs around and not too long ago the game celebrated its 10th anniversary. That being said how does the game compare against more modern titles? Well for those who are wondering if World of Warcraft is still relevant, the recent numbers released by Raptr might surprise you.

According to Raptr’s recent numbers for the PC games that are played the most for the month of November, World of Warcraft came in second place with a 15.61% market share, putting them behind Riot Games’ League of Legends which sits at 19.99%. It does not come as a surprise that World of Warcraft is sitting so high up.

This is an impressive achievement for WoW which is 10 years old. The game sure has a lot of re-play value for many gamers who play WoW.

I bet, if the subscriptions for World of Warcraft were cheaper, or it is mostly free to play like League of Legends, World of Warcraft will be the number 1 most played game since League of Legends only has about a 5% lead over WoW, and the Warcraft and World of Warcraft brand is very popular with a lot of older gamers who may be more likely to play WoW if the subscription was cheaper, or free like League of Legends.

impressive as it is, I wonder how long they can keep it up? Nothing lasts forever.

I think WoW can keep it up for many years to come since people like playing games which they know how to play, and they know are good to play like how Call of Duty,  Halo, Final Fantasy, Zelda, Grand Theft Auto, and Mario are still very popular after many years because people know the game will be good, and they are already fans of the series, so they are more likely to play newer titles which will be release in the future.

There are also not many good alternative MMORPG which are as popular or as good as WoW.

I think once people in Africa, and other less modern places with no internet or slow internet start getting online on a fast connection, one of the things they eventually do is play WoW, and WoW now has a trial for playing for free, so there could still be a lot of people who want to play WoW, but can't because of no internet, or slow internet.

I know its player base is dropping, I give it another 20 years tops.
I think the player base is rising and dropping throughout the year depending on when new content, and levels are added to the game, and if the new content and levels can attract people who previous players, and new players.

In 20 years, I bet most of the people who are not connected to the internet like people in the African Jungle and Desert, and poorer places will have access to internet which could bring many millions of more WoW gamers who recently got a connection to the internet, and see a online video or ad of people having fun online playing WoW.

Also, WoW maybe playable on a smartphone, and tablet and consoles in the future bringing in even more gamers from mobile devices and consoles if Blizzard ports WoW to mobile and consoles like Diablo 3 which is now on consoles.

World of Warcraft subscription numbers are on the up

Oct 15, 2014

World of Warcraft is experiencing a rise in subscribers, climbing to 7.4 million at the end of September compared to 6.8 million following the end of June, Blizzard confirmed.

The massively multiplayer game's subscriber-base is nearly back at its height of 7.6 million users from earlier this year. The rise is being attributed by Activision-Blizzard to the upcoming expansion, as well as the pre-expansion-patch which offers updated character models and tweaks to both user interface and player classes.

The thing that Wow has going for it is how in depth you can get into the game with professions and other character development. I have been playing with my wife for over 8 years and I still enjoy logging. They will be around for a long time as long as they can keep the game fresh.

I agree, keeping WoW fresh will keep many gamers coming back. I think adding new levels, items, characters, classes, and stories is what keep people coming back to games like WoW, EverQuest, Runescape, Final Fantasy, and other similar games.

I think they got this new expansion right, it's really fun to play. I didn't like the previous two and thought they were lacking something.
