Sony made headlines this afternoon when it released final spec details on its new proprietary mobile memory platform, Memory Stick XC, which they say, is capable of storing up to two terabytes (TB) of information. Sound amazing? It is, but the best part is that the Memory Stick XC is expected to be backwards compatible with previous Memory Stick-enabled devices, including the Sony PSP. The new format will come in XC standard, XC-HG, and PRO-HG variations, including both Duo and Micro lines. According to the specs released today, each of the aforementioned variations will be capable of reaching 2 TBs of total data capacity.
As it stands, the largest Memory Stick can only reach 32GBs of total space, and while it'll be years before we'll see a 2TB XC variation on the market, it'll undoubtedly give the format a much needed nudge toward larger, interim capacities, probably within the 64GB and 128GB range.
