At Sony Computer Entertainment's 2008 Media Briefing, SCE announced that its 80 GB PlayStation 3 hardware unit will now be its primary SKU available for PS3 purchasers. This will replace the 40 GB unit, and will be available at the same $399.99 price that the current PS3 costs.
No new SKU was announced, and the 40 GB SKU will be phased out, so it seems that Sony is likely moving back to a one-version console market. Unfortunately, the company did not make any comment on backwards compatibility, which is a key concern for buyers.
The 80 GB PS3 will hit the $399.99 price point in September, and comes with a DualShock 3 controller.
