sourceThe latest findings from the Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR) group suggest an all-digital future may be closer than we think.
GamesIndustry reports that according to EEDAR's findings, the number of games released physically on Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony hardware has declined from 383 copies in 2008 to 145 in 2014.
Conversely, the drop of physical releases has been countered by the rise of digital. In 2008, 102 games were released onto digital storefronts, whereas in 2014, the number rose to 279. Now, virtually all games released physically also see a release on digital storefronts.
A similar trend has been seen among publishers, as the number of active physical game publishers has decreased from 82 in 2011 to 46 in 2014. On the digital end, 146 publishers released games in the digital-only space in 2014. This is the highest number in history. EEDAR credits this resurgence to the "growing digital ecosystem" and "more robust digital storefront experiences" on current consoles.
The digital market also offers a diverse range of publishers where the larger companies do not overshadow the smaller ones, thus leveling out the playing field for both triple-A and indie games alike.
Another recent study also found that while mobile gaming is incredibly popular, console gaming still earns the greatest amount of money.
truly sad news.
