he stars -- the oceans of stars, if you will -- alligned just right for Microsoft over in Japan, and the Xbox 360 made its second-ever appearance at the top of the Japanese console charts.

Media Create sales figures, covering February 16 through February 22, have the 360 at 25,334 units sold. That's better than the PS3's 16,149 units and even better than the Wii's 16,973 units.

This is the doing, of course, of Star Ocean: The Last Hope. The Square Enix semi-exclusive gave the 360 another rarity: top placement in the software charts. The game sold 162,232 units in its first week -- nearly better than the rest of the top five combined.

That remaining top five includes Mario & Luigi RPG 3 in its second week and three versions of Idol Master SP, which Media Create treats as separate releases (this is somewhat like treating Pokemon Diamond & Pearl as separate releases -- different tracking firms do it differently).

Here's the full top 10, for those keeping score at home:

* Star Ocean 4 (Square Enix, X360): 162,232
* Mario & Luigi RPG 3 (Nintendo, DS): 61,781
* Idol Master SP Perfect Sun (Bandai Namco, PSP): 46,474
* Idol Master SP Missing Moon (Bandai Namco, PSP): 39,523
* Idol Master SP Wandering Star (Bandai Namco, PSP): 35,376
* Shining force Feather (Sega, DS): 30,581
* Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G PSP the Best (Capcom, PSP): 17,775
* Sacred Blaze (Flight Plan, PS2): 17,586
* Street Fighter IV (Capcom, PS3): 17,416
* Demon's Souls (SCE, PS3): 15,581

While this is the first time a 360 game has been at the top of the software charts, the system techincally wasn't the best selling piece of hardware for the week. That honor went to, as usual, the DSi, which sold 41,839 units. PSP was second with 29,552.

I've noticed that the PS3 is doing better by the day in game sales... not so much in consoles. The Wii didn't even get on the top ten! All hail DSi, PSP, and PS3.
