Microsoft thinks they can pull a fast one on us, but they underestimate just how severely we lack a social life. Yesterday we ran a story where we speculated on whether or not Microsoft upgraded some of their Xbox 360 Jasper model consoles with 512MB of internal memory over the usual 256. The discovery was first brought to light by some eagle-eyed modders who discovered the additional memory boost, and in response Microsoft today confirmed that they have in fact upgraded some of their systems.

We contacted Microsoft for comment on the matter, here's what they had to say:

QUOTE We can confirm that Xbox 360 Arcade now offers 512MB of internal memory. Xbox 360 Arcade consoles with 512MB of internal memory will be in markets worldwide. We want to offer consumers a bit more memory at the same low price so they can enjoy more experiences on Xbox LIVE.

The upgrade is undoubtedly a move to have more localized data capacity for current and forthcoming Xbox 360 features, but, on the other hand, the last time the console got an onboard memory upgrade it was in support of the New Xbox Experience from November.

I think this article that IGN posted is misleading since they said 512 MB of memory when they should of said flash storage memory like flash drives, sd cards which is different from System memory like DDR RAM.

The arcade always had 512 MB of GDDR3 System Memory, but only came with a 256MB Memory card, or a built in "Flash Memory card"

The Xbox Arcade is still not a good system for entertainment, live or netflix to own because it lacks a real hard drive like the Xbox 360 premium and elite.

You can't store a lot of Demos, Trailers, or a movie on a 512 MB Flash memory hard drive. Xbox 360 arcade should atleast come with a 20GB Hard drive since hard drives are not very expensive these days.
