The rumors are rumors no more. Duke Nukem Forever developer 3D Realms is shutting down, according to a message board post on the company's website by longtime webmaster for the studio Joe Siegler.
3D Realms' website is currently inaccessible because their servers are being pounded, but before the crash, Siegler confirmed suspicions.
"It's not a marketing thing," said Siegler. "It's true. I have nothing further to say at this time."
The fate of Duke Nukem Forever remains up in the air. Take-Two Interactive told me last night it retains the rights to publish Duke Nukem Forever.
