During the recent Nintendo Direct conference, company president Satoru Iwata announced that Nintendo is preparing to release a firmware update for the 3DS on April 25.

The new firmware will add patch support, as well as the ability to create and label folders on the 3DS home screen. This means OCD gamers like myself can finally have dedicated folders for NES games, Game Boy games, 3DSWare and so on. Each folder will be able to hold up to 60 items, and the first letter of whatever you name it will show on the folder's icon.

As for the patch functionality, players will be able to download patches and updates for their 3DS games via the 3DS eShop. Mario Kart 7, Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance and Japanese-only New Love Plus will be first in line for patches (no more skipping over WuHu Island during online matches, it seems). The Mario Kart 7 patch is due this May, and Iwata said Konami and Square Enix would announce a patch date for their respective titles at a later time.
