Less than two months after Square Enix revealed Theatrythm Final Fantasy, Sega has announced a 3DS rhythm game of their own. Titled Rhythm Thief R: Emperor Napoleon's Legacy, Japanese magazine Famitsu reports this week that the game will be a new kind of "rhythm-action-adventure game", full of "stylish dance scenes".
The protagonist of Rhythm Thief R is an 18-year-old Parisian boy named Ralph. By day he leads a quiet life in the suburbs with his pet dog Fondue; by night he is the thief known only as "R", infamous throughout the city for his mysterious practice of stealing jewelry only to return it a few days later.
Three years before the game's story begins, the coffin of Napoleon Bonaparte was stolen from the tombs of Les Invalides. It's unclear who was responsible or why. In the game itself, Ralph's first target is the Bracelet of Tiamat being exhibited in the Louvre. The bracelet is engraved with a crest that seems to match the one on a gold coin that used to belong to Ralph's missing father.
Ralph's search for his father will take him through several real-life locations - as well as the Louvre, the famous Notre Dame cathedral will make an appearance. His talent for thievery and avoiding pursuit stems from the "natural sense of rhythm" he inherited from his mother. "Rhythm games will be incorporated in scenes where you sneak around museums and art galleries, and scenes where you're plotting your escape from pursuers," says Famitsu. "Press buttons with accurate timing and tilt the console to clear the rhythm games, and the story will progress. By demonstrating your natural sense of rhythm you can overcome all kinds of adversity."
Famitsu shows two examples of how rhythm will be incorporated into the game's action adventure gameplay. In one, Ralph is trying to avoid police pursuit by escaping across the rooftops. Players can use the A button to jump past policemen, and the B button to slide away from their helicopters - relying on that natural sense of rhythm to get the timing right, of course. The other shows Ralph facing off against a giant armored knight, where the D-pad and A button can be used to attack to the left and right, respectively.
Other gameplay elements will involve hiding amongst statues by quickly choosing the right option to mimic their poses, and tilting the 3DS console to dodge enemy attacks. Ralph's dog Fondue will also have a role to play, supporting Ralph in his job as the thief R.
Mysterious Thief R will include music from as-yet unnamed famous artists, with details to be announced at a later date. It will also feature local download play and streetpass functionality. The game is being produced by Shun Nakamura of Sega's Sonic Team, and is scheduled for release in Japan this winter.
