At this morning's "Nintendo Direct" 3DS press event, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata confirmed that the previously announced 3D video recording feature will be coming in the next 3DS firmware update. Videos can last for up to ten minutes, and will include options such as time lapse, stop motion and rapid fire shots.
New features will also be coming to StreetPass Mii Plaza, including a map that shows where Miis are originally from. This seems to add a bit of new gameplay to simply StreetPassing as wide a variety of people as you can, since the video example showed off a map of Japan partitioned into its various prefectures. When someone from a new prefecture then StreetPassed with the host 3DS unit, that region of the country became highlighted.
This could become a new "Gotta Catch 'Em All" aspect of the StreetPass pastime, and would likely be separated into the various States here in America. Have you met someone from New York? Kentucky? The little upper portion of Michigan that's kind of separate? That sort of thing.
The StreetPass quest of Find Mii will also get a new sequel, accessible for anyone who's completed the first one – Find Mii 2. Nintendo's video showed off an expanded scope for it compared to its predecessor, as it includes a map screen with diverging paths and two heroes heading into battle at once. (No more lone warriors lining up to fight their foes one-by-one.)
The Puzzle Swap side of StreetPassing will also be expanded to include new puzzles. The gameplay looks like it's unchanged for this, but the images available to unlock will be all new. Nintendo gave us a glimpse at a Donkey Kong Country Returns panel to get us hyped:
Finally, a new feature to transfer data from one 3DS system to another will be introduced. That's kind of vague, yeah, but few details are available right now. We hope to find out more soon.
All of these features have technically only been announced in Japan, but it's extremely likely that they'll be headed to other territories.
