Matthew Sands could not believe the driver of a red Geo Tracker that passed him on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard this morning.

"He was awful small to be driving," said Sands, 43, of Hartford City.

Sands and another driver who followed the vehicle soon learned why the driver was so small; he turned out to be a seven-year-old boy behind the wheel of his grandmother's Geo, according to police.

Several motorists called 911 dispatch around 9 a.m. today to report a small child driving a vehicle down MLK toward the Muncie Mall.

The boy turned off Granville into the Muncie Mall parking lot, and drove the vehicle into bushes and a tree at the Outback Steak House as Sands attempted to block him from leaving.

As Sands got out of his vehicle to go up and take the keys away, the boy put the vehicle in reverse and hit Sands' vehicle. Sands got the keys out of the vehicle as county sheriff's Capt. Mike Scroggins arrived on the scene.

Police speculated the boy might have learned to drive from a PlayStation video game.

The boy started on MLK off Waid Avenue, and drove more than a mile to the eastern mall entrance before Sands and another motorist could get to him.

"He just wanted to drive," the boy's grandmother said, explaining that her grandson, who attends Storer Elementary School, had never attempted to drive before.

that's impossible on learning it from a game.

....I'm shocked that a little boy could drive

That is crazy! I don't think he learned it from a video game.
