When Michael Thommason put it up for sale earlier this month, the prospect of taking hold of the world's largest video game collection probably seemed like a tall order for gamers lacking the necessary funds or storage space. But one had the luck and $750,250 necessary to take home the prize.

According to an update on GameGavel, the site where Thommason first posted his Guinness World Record-certified collection in early June, the auction for his 11,000-plus games ended with a winning bid just over three-quarters of a million dollars.

That's a lot of money, no doubt. But it comes out to roughly $68 per game, which is surprisingly (or depressingly) close to the going rate for most console and PC games coming out these days.

There were over fifty bids at the end of the day. Judging by the bidding history, it looks like two different gamers were locked in a pretty intense bidding war for the thing. After a few early bids at comically low prices like $1 or $10, the bidding broke $10,000 on Tuesday, June 10th. Oculus Rift inventor Palmer Luckey even put in two bids that day. Despite all that new Facebook money, he didn't go over $100,000.

By Tuesday evening, user peeps_10091970 and catch123 were the only two left to lock horns.
Catch's last bid on Wednesday morning was for $750,000—up a hefty amount from peeps' previous $700,250. The last $250 put peeps over the edge in this high-stakes game of chicken.

GameGavel didn't provide any further identifying information for the winner. But let's hope whoever it his has some extra closet space. Because judging by the footage of this thing, they're gonna need it.

wish I could own that.

I agree that's one heck of a collection. But 11k games there is no way you could play that many in a life time lol.

P.S. Can you imagine the look on your friends face when the come over to game and you showed them your collection lol.

I think I read an article on this guy on when he received the Guiness recognition, At the time, I never really thought he would ever sell it since I assumed someone with that amount of passion for hoarding video games wouldn't be able to, but I guess the money is just too tempting. I imagined it would have been worth over a million too, though it's probably going to be worth that much after a few years anyway.

I would think it's likely to be more of an investment than a purchase to actually play the games. The likelihood is that the collection contains a lot of old video games and ones that simply aren't produced anymore, and as we all know very well, these types of games do not lose their value, if anything they gain it as the amount that are in circulation consistently drops as discs/cartridges are broken and so on. It's a great investment for the guy who won the bidding, I'm sure.

Could you imagine if his house burnt down. That's all I could think of... I mean, how would anyone be able to insure that sort of stuff.
don't even think of that, it's too evil for words.  though one would have to invest in some fire proof storage for the games.

Man, I think it's even impossible to play all these games in a single lifetime! The things I would do to own a video game collection like this one....Just think about how many hidden gems of video game history are hidden in that collection. I bet you could even take just one game and no one would notice.

I wonder how many of those games he actually played. 750k is a nice amount of money to get for your video game collection, wish I had that many games and could sell them for that amount of money.

Sometimes, you just don't need all that physical baggage weighing down your life and filling up your home.

Not that I'm trashing his collection at all, which is marvellous, just the neccessity to own it, and hold on to it, and then, inevitably, barely touch it. When thats the case, it's better in the hands of someone, or a group of people, who'll get some fresh pleasure/joy out of it.

Thats a *whopping* chunk of bread they made too. Good for them. Wonder what's next in their lives?

That is an incredible collection of games. But to be honest, I rather use like $10,000 and buy a ton of games during a Steam sale than buy that collection for $750,250. It's more of a display, rather than 11,000+ games you actually want to play.

Feel like I'd have to devote my own man-cave to such an ambitious collection of games. That said, not sure I'd play most of them outside of the NES / SNES / PSX / PS2 era.
In any case, I'm sure there's a certain collector's fee attached to all this, I can't imagine how long it would take to acquire so many games, not to mention organize them.

Kind of makes me wonder how much all the games I've bought in the past would be worth if I sold them today -- probably not as much as if I never bought them to begin with at retail.

It's an impressive collection indeed. However, even if I had the money, I wouldn't have the time or the storage to fully enjoy it. Besides, I haven't even finished all the games I do own!

You literally almost just made me spit out my coffee. Ahaha that's insane to even think about. I don't think anyone has the insurance to cover that. It'd piss that company off so bad.

Surely he just collected them for the fun of it and never even played half of them? That's a pretty damn good effort though..
Wow, that's a really expensive hobby even if he did it for fun. I wonder how much he spent of these games though.

He could just share them with me! That's a huge collection. Anyhow, I have like 220+ games in my Steam Library and I've hardly played half of them. I can't imagine that guy playing even 10% of those games even if he is a full-time gamer. Well, at least he supported the developers.

I can't even imagine what it's like owning 11k games. I'm impressed with some record collectors who have thousands of them, but this kind of takes the cake. I wonder how long it would really take to play through them all? At least you can't get bored when you have something like that sitting around.
