The slumping economy won't be having an effect on Nintendo this holiday season, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said to Reuters Japan in an interview conducted this week.

While admitting that Nintendo's original forecasts of 27.5 million Wii systems and 30.5 million DS systems for the year ending March 2009 are high, Iwata told the news service that both systems are selling according to plan.

He explained the apparent recession-proof nature of video games by saying that compared to travel and eating out, gaming offers long periods of fun for the entire family at an easy to swallow price. It's easy to make people select video gaming as their entertainment during a tight period, he said.

For those who are anticipating the upcoming NPD November sales results, Iwata gave out a figure that hints at how big Nintendo's numbers are going to be. Nintendo's internal figures show the Wii having sold 800,000 units in the one week following Thanksgiving. This, noted Reuters, is nearly double the same period last year.

Selling along side the Wii is Wii Fit. Both the system and the fitness software sell as many units as Nintendo produces.

The DS is keeping up in America as well. Like the Wii, the DS sold around 800,000 units over the post-Thanksgiving week, a 20% increase over last year. Although supply has caught up with demand for the DS, Iwata feels the DS market is more active this year than it was last year.
