A new glitch in Super Mario Bros.?

Not sure if its a glitch but here's what happen; I was on 1-2 trying to do a item less speed run when I died at the midpoint but instead of starting at the midpoint I started at the beginning of the level.

After trying about a dozen times I got it to glitch, too... odd.

I think it happens because the flag only gets set when the page that has said checkpoint gets fully scrolled on the screen, however this is just a hypothesis and is still being research.
