The Amazon Fire TV Stick, a new HDTV dongle and Chromecast competitor that was introduced in October, begins shipping to customers today. And apparently there are a lot of customers waiting for their devices, because Amazon also revealed that the Fire TV Stick is the “fastest-selling Amazon device ever.”

“We built a ton of these, but customer demand still outpaced our supply,” Amazon Devices senior vice president David Limp said. “We’re excited by the overwhelming customer response and the team is working hard to build more as quickly as possible.”

The Amazon Fire TV Stick is a $39 dongle that plugs into your television’s HDMI port and provides access to streaming content from Netflix, Amazon Instant Prime Video, Hulu Plus, SHOWTIME, Pandora, YouTube and more, in addition to access to TV and movie rental options.

I think the Amazon Fire TV is a better alternative than the Chromecast because the Fire TV stick has a remote, so it does not need a smartphone, tablet, or computer to control it like a smartphone. The Fire TV stick also can open apps, and play mobile games with a Bluetooth wireless controller like the Fire TV gamepad. Tablet games like Candy Crush Saga now also work on Fire TV.
