If you were to take a look at the high-end gaming rigs, both desktop and laptop, you’ll notice that they all have one thing in common – Intel processors. In fact if you were to shop for a budget laptop or PC, you will find that sometimes these PC OEMs will offer up AMD processors to help make their products cheaper.

However it seems that AMD has had enough and wants to stop being known as the “cheaper solution” in the eyes of the public and wants to be known for its high-end and high-performance chipsets instead. According to the company’s CEO Lisa Su, how they will achieve this is through a high-investment in the x86 field.

I think this is a good plan for AMD for making more high performance chips since PC Gamers and hobbyist want fast chips, and can afford to pay more for faster chips.

Plus, people who want a very cheap PC with a cheap chip will buy a PC with a VIA chipset, or one of the many PCs with a cheap Asian Chip in it which is made by a brand like Rockchip, and AllWinner.

There are also a lot of cheap PCs with Intel Celerons, and Atom CPUs like the many Chromebooks, and cheap Windows netbooks, desktops, and mini pcs.

Didn't realize they were being regarded as such.

I think AMD used to be known as the cheaper performance CPU maker in the early 2000s where you pay less for a CPU, but still get a fast CPU which is as good or better than similarly priced Intel CPUs.

I guest, the reputation as being a cheap high performance CPU maker stuck with them until now.

I feel Intel these days has more cheaper chips like their Atom, and Celeron CPUs, and onboard video which are installed in a lot of cheap tablets, smartphones, Chromebooks, and cheaper Windows based computers in the $200-300+ price range.
