After more than eight years in the hands of consumers, Android is poised to overtake Windows as the most used operating system in the world. This measurement comes by way of web analytics firm StatCounter, which follows trends in worldwide web traffic. Microsoft Windows holds the slimmest of margins over Android, and they could trade positions very soon if current trends continue.

Windows accounts for 38.6% of global web traffic, according to StatCounter. Android, on the other hand, has climbed to 37.4% of online activity. Android has grown considerably since 2012, when StatCounter reports it accounted for just 2.2% of web traffic.

I think it is hard to compete with a free operating system which cost nothing to buy, and is owned by Google which has the biggest online advertising network which is Adwords and Adsense. Google also owns some of the biggest entertainment websites like YouTube, Blogger, and Google Play which they use to show a lot of ads for Google Android devices like the Nexus 7, Nexus 5, and Nexus 6 phones and tablets.

An Android tablet is also very affordable where you can buy a budget Android tablet for $40 or less at a store. A lot of people who can't afford an iPad will most likely but an Android tablet to browse the web on a mobile device, or a laptop-like device when they use a physical keyboard.

Games like Pokemon Go, and Clash of Clans Birds may also make a lot of people use Android, so they can play certain games like how people bought the Nintendo Switch to play Zelda, and Mario Kart when they get released.

Some apps like Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, etc may also work better on Android and iOS compared to Windows, or don't have a version of the app for Windows, so a lot of people are forced to use an Android or iOS device if they want to use certain apps. People who use a lot of Android apps will make the amount of Android users be higher.

Are we talking about windows mobile here? Because you can't compare Android with Windows on a desktop.

The full article on ExtremeTech.com is mainly talking about Windows desktop because Windows mobile is unlikely to be installed on 38.6% of all online devices like phones, tablets, and PCs which Statscounter counted with its website visitor counter software. Windows Mobile/Phone is now on less than 1% of device according to Windows Phone market share sinks below 1 percent . Statscounter is just a visitor counting program for websites, and it does not compare Android with Windows. It just keeps track of what people used to access a website, and the persons location, ip, and web browser they used.

Even if Windows Phone is included, it would not make a noticeable difference to Windows percentage of online devices because not many devices connect to the internet using Windows Phone compared to Windows Desktop edition, Android and iOS.
