I've been on the horror mood lately so I've decided to try out a few games for my laptop that would get me to jump a few times. Since my Windows XP laptop is old, it doesn't have enough RAM to run a 3D game nowadays. So I was hoping if anyone has any ideas of games I can play that's sprite based on. Mainly the ones that have similar gameplay of Pokemon/Earthbound and the like. Right now I'm playing "Ib" and looking forward to playing The Witch's House after it.

Any suggestions?

You know those little grey-boxed PC games for like $5 -$10 most people overlook? I had one in 2004 called Sanitarium and it was really good. It is hard to explain how it plays and isn't the best graphically even then, since it came out in 1998, but the story and such were great. It is basically a point and click adventure with puzzles similar to Silent Hill series' (sliding mosaics and riddles and such) until the end where you have a lot of odd combat.

Pretty much any horror game that PewDiePie plays. Those are some scary games. Like the Exorsist or however you spell it. Or was that the Grudge. It was one of those horror movies.

this isn't even a horror game. it is a fan-made Sonic game with a dark tone. And LMAO The ripped off the laugh sound from Chrono Trigger's Norstein Beckler's Spine Tingling Show (The same laugh used by Kefka in FF6 but with an echo effect for CT)

That's fine for now. With the exception of Sonic.exe since I've played it before.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think this should be enough for now. Feel free to jot down more suggestions. Assuming games that are free to download because I'm poor. :p Other than that, yeah. I can probably stop by the store and pick up something maybe during the weekend or so.

If your into surreal horror Yume Nikki.

Also some people find LSD dream emulator to be scary, even though it's not intentionally. I kind of do as well.

The first one I had trouble sleeping for literally weeks after playing through it (didn't even complete it). It's just so bizarre, even the bits that shouldn't have been scary were. Jump scares just startle and stress me out. But I wouldn't call it creepy or scary . When the games are based off or around dreams it suddenly is frightening, because I know I can go to sleep and have a nightmare that will feel real, even if only for a brief moment.
 
You could take the popular option and play Slenderman, but it is a very rubbish game...

Some free downloadable horror games I've played are SCP and Ao Oni c:

SCP is about a monster that moves when you blink, trying to snap your neck, the idea is to escape from this science facility before being killed by this monster :3 (unfortunately it does crash if you don't have a windows-64 but is very scary indeed) is a must play if you want to be extremely scared!

Ao Oni is... Funny, but scary, as you try escape a haunted house (which is ran by a monster) I recommend this game if you enjoy puzzle games as usually you have to find certain items to move onto the next area. The monster attacks fairly randomly, which gives it a fear factor.

I hate to break it to you, but that is an old version of sonic.exe. Version 4 and 5 go beyond that part with a game over screen (dare you to press a single key on it) and after that an image of the sonic with bright eyes and red japanese text and the music played at this part makes it creepier.

It's still not a horror game. a Horror game is like Doom 3, Silent Hill, Alone in the Dark (the original 3 not the one for 360) where it is dark and creepy and you don't know what is coming and it plays like a horror movie. Condemned was another great one. Sonic.exe is just a fanmade sonic game with ill-placed bloody and sounds ripped like a bad youtube poop video.
 
^ It's horror, I just wouldn't call it a game. A lot of "indie" or "fanmade" horror "games", while maybe scary, are absolutely a terrible excuse for a game. Calling them games would imply things like big rigs are 10/10 GOTY material. It would also imply that gaming is probably dead and in an absolute shithole.
 
I believe the title is the dark house.
It's about a zombie trying to get you and you should find a way out without confronting it.
