A group called Infinium Labs had previously announced that they were going to make this mysterious “Phantom” console, and that it was going to amaze the world with a subscription video game console service. Not only did they show almost nothing, but upon review, it was an awful idea - make a console that always had to be connected to a network to work in the year of 2004

It sort of reminds me of Valve's Steambox which requires Steam to download and play games on Steam OS.

I feel most people probably would of bought a Gaming PC instead of an online-only game console in 2004 because people can play CD-ROM disc games, and free games on flash games websites, and games which they download from game download websites.

pretty much, but in a 2004 setting, MS got blasted in 2013 for trying this.

Some of the most dedicated console gamers enjoy physical versions of games, and may live in places like a house boat, RV/Recreational Van, or rural areas where the internet is slow, or not available sometimes.

Buying console disc/cartridge games, and selling and trading old games with friends and games stores can be fun, or help gamers get back some of their money, so they can buy games which they haven't played.

Digital games can't be sold at a higher price depending on how much money someone in the future is willing to pay for a game which is no longer for sale at Gamestop and physical retail stores.

I think online only consoles may also be worth a lot less money when they no longer work because the server is no longer online, so you can't buy, or play games if it needs to connect to a server to work.

I feel this console may of done better as a Gaming PC with an optional USB External CD/DVD-ROM drive for playing PC games which were bought from a computer games store. The average internet speed was not very fast in 2004.
