Do you rent Blu-ray discs from Netflix? Have you had any show up with a crack on the outer edge that makes the disc unplayable? Victor just wrote to us that he's received several Blu-ray discs lately that are damaged, and he's wondering if it's just him or part of a wider problem.

Here's what's been happening to Victor:

QUOTE We have been experiencing a growing number of brand new Blu-Ray releases from Netflix that arrive with a small crack (usually 1-3mm, and sometimes only through the hardcoat part) along the outer edge that makes the disc unplayable. In better than 4 years we have had only ONE regular Netflix DVD arrive cracked, but with Blu Ray we've now have three arrive in just the last three weeks with this problem. I started asking around, and it seems like this is a growing problem. The Blu Ray hard coating actually seems to make the discs MORE susceptible to damage in transit.

Mars Box noted this problem nearly two years ago, when 13 out of 24 Blu-ray titles he rented in September and October of 2007 arrived cracked. In the comments below the post, other Netflix customers are still posting (as recently as last month) that their Blu-ray rentals keep showing up cracked.

Netflix raised the rates on Blu-ray plans by $1 per membership tier this past March. At the time, they justified the price increase by saying, "Blu-ray discs are substantially more expensive than standard definition DVDs." We wonder if that price increase wasn't also a way for Netflix to avoid an expensive envelope redesign, and pass the cost of frequent disc replacement over to the consumers who rent Blu-ray in the first place.

thats why I don't order movies online, if they get damage during transport then most likely I will get blamed for it. Or I just waited a few days for damaged goods.

This is one of the reasons I don't like buying DVDs from online. I once had a CD case arrive cracked, but The CD was fine. I did not pay much for it, so it did not bother me too much.

Plus, some companies make you pay for shipping to pay it back.

If your too embarassed to buy an adult movie at a store or a regular movie with nudity/sexual themes like "American Pie" then buying it online is the next best alternative to not buying it.

I once bought two used textbooks I bought online that did not come with the text book just the lab manual, but the online retailer gave me a refund and let me keep the lab manual, and the other one tricked not being more clear on its ad that it is just the lab manual. Who sells a textbook without a lab manual?, lame.

I recommend to avoid buying used multi-set CD, DVDs, an books online since there is a chance someone forgot to pack the second disk, etc.

I never been in an adult store in my life.

Yeah I agree with that.

If I am gonna order anything like dvds or games online it will be from amazon as I have not had one problem with them.

I bought my CDs and books from Amazon Marketplace which is like a place for regular people like you and me to make an account to sell stuff.

But, I prefer buying from Amazon and not Amazon marketplace since Amazon has free shipping for stuff over 25 USD.
