It is possible that paid to write sites like Squidoo, Associated Content, Hubpages, Triond, Blogger with Adsense ads, eHow, Weebly with adsense, etc are making some people less likely to edit or create wikipedia articles or other free content on free websites which don't pay their writers.

Writing for free can be kind of boring and unsatisfying while getting paid to write on a websites like the ones I mention are more exciting if you are into getting paid for your work since you can earn cents-dollars, hundreds of dollars, or even thousands of dollars a month depending on how many articles you write, how much traffic they get and how good the articles are.

With Wikipedia you earn nothing, and your work might get deleted if the editors, and staff don't agree with your point of view.

I think people also have less time to write on free websites where you get no money for your writing vs. paid wiki/article style sites where you can get back a few dollars or hundreds a month depending on how good your writing is, and how good you promote your articles on search engines, Twitter, Myspace, Facebook, Google Plus and other social sites.

Another reason Wikipedia lost some editors are all their outgoing links are rel=NoFollow, so you get no link juice if you use your site as a reference link. This means you won't get a pagerank or better search engine rankings when using your link as a reference.
