Are video call job interviews fair to the job seeker?

No, I do not think video call job interviews are fair because some people still use 5 Mbps or slower internet connections like dial-up, slower DSL and cable internet plans, and ISDN, so people who use slower internet connections will have slowdown problems related to video and audio quality.

Their connection also might get overloaded, and disconnect from the video call causing them to lose their chance of getting a job.

Plus, a lot of people have slow computers, and low-quality webcams which can affect their video call quality, and lower their chances of getting a job because of the low quality video caused by a slow computer, and low quality webcam.

There is also a chance the employer does not want to hire the job seeker because of the appearance of their room like the color of their wall and windows because they can see the persons room background during a video call.

The interviewer can also find out where someone lives by looking up the I.P. address of the video call, so he may not want to hire people from poorer neighborhoods, and he is also invading a person's privacy by tracing the location of the job seeker's video call's I.P. address.

Job interviews with video calls can also cost the job seeker a lot of money if they use a Cellular Data Plan internet or limited/capped internet plan to make a video call because Limited ISP can charges many dollars per MB once you go over your bandwidth limit which can happen during video calls since video calls use a lot of bandwidth.

There is also the cost of electricity for the computer, internet modem/router, and room lighting which cost the job seeker money to use.

Do people actually do this? I wouldn't trust my connection no matter how good it was for something like this. Never know when someone will pull up the internet lines with a back hoe.

I think it is not very common in Canada, but might be more common in other countries, or some jobs like webmasters where people are used to working online. Most job interviews here are usually a short interview over the phone, or in person interviews at an office.

I also won't trust my connection since there is always a chance of someone disconnecting my internet by performing maintenance on my ISP's internet line, or the ISP rebooting my modem which can happen when they install new firmware, or software on their network.

I'm also afraid job interviews over the internet maybe a scam. There are a lot of internet scams online, so job interviews over the internet via instant messaging, video calls, and e-mail can be part of a scam created by a scammer to try to get your personal information like Social security number, driver's license number, credit card number, and banking information, so they can scam your money, and steal your identity for taking out loans from a bank.

I guess this would be big in Asian and Korean countries, but I know all job interviews in my area are done in person.
I think people mostly line up to be interviewed for factory and other types of jobs in Asia because Asian countries have so many people where it is probably easier to put up a sign or ad on TV saying they are hiring, and waiting for thousands of people to line up for a chance to work at a job during the interview event.

I read on tech blogs that whenever new game consoles, iPhones, and Samsung phones are release, Asian/Chinese electronics factories hire many thousands of people to make a lot of electronics and tech products.

I bet, Asian colleges probably have a lot of job recruiting fairs from different companies trying to hire recent graduates from a college.

I know a few recruiters and they dislike how people are less professional and dress "sloppily" just because it is a video interview.. some people even think it's okay to be in pajamas, sweatpants, etc..

I agree those work conditions are bad. I bet those Asian factories probably attract a lot of workers who can't find good paying jobs with better work conditions, or recently got fired from their old job because of being lazy, and other reasons.
