Are video converters as important these days as in the past?

No, I feel video converter software is becoming less important for people who use newer media player software like Media Player Classic, VLC and Mplayer which can open almost all popular video file formats, or have the Kazaa lite codec pack installed on their PC.

But, video converters are important for people with older video player software, and devices which can only play a few video file types like divx, and mpeg.

I rarely use video converter software to convert my video to different file formats these days since VLC media player, Kazaa Lite Codec, and most other video players on my PC can play most video file formats I open with it.

I also mainly watch video online on YouTube, and other video sites which uses Flash video.

My portable devices like Tablet, and laptop can also play most popular file formats like MP4, WMV, MPEG, etc with a third party video player, or the bundled pre-installed video player.

Website owners and video uploaders are also saving their videos to the most common formats like WMV, MP4, and MPEG which can be played on most modern computer.

Should come a day we won't need this.

I think newer operating systems like Windows 8, newer versions of Linux, and Apple Mac will someday bundle a better media player which can play almost every video file type since newer hard drives will be huge, so they can install more codecs on huge hard drive without using up much space because the drive has tons of storage space in the future.

But, for now you can use 3rd-party video players like VLC media player, and Media Player Classic to open a lot of media file types.

VLC media player can play almost all popular video, and music files without need to download additional video and audio codecs since the codecs are built-in to the player's software.

VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols.

VLC has most of the Codecs built-into the video player, so it can play most video files since when you install VLC it can recognize most video and audio files which most people use.

LOL, ok so i'm sitting at my computer with a device right in front of me. lol, the device has written on it video converter! haha!
Ok so it's actually an HDMI to Component converter so that i can use my Hauppauge HD PVR to record my Xbox gameplay. Well hopefully. I was a bit of an idiot the other day and I managed to purchase a Component TO HDMI converter instead of a HDMI TO Component converter! lol.
