If my, say, iPhone gets robbed, I can always get another and re-add my contacts and re-download apps from my appstore account.
If my 3DS gets robbed, I lose anything that was in that SD card, anything I bought from the eShop, and the game cartidge that was in it. Not only that, but a lot of people travel with cases to store their cartidges, and for someone who has a good amount of games there.. That's a lot of money down the drain.
You can always buy your 3DS and all of your games and a new case back, but your progress is lost, you'll have to start over.
I personally hope Nintendo will add some kind of account system to the 3DS where I can re-download things I already purchased.
How about you? Are you afraid your 3DS might get stolen? If it ever gets stolen, what will you do?
I remember when I accidentally left my DS Lite on a bus, I was devastated :c But if I lost my 3DS with all the things I purchased from the eshop, I may decide that I don't want to buy another 3DS and all my games again >.<
Yeah, I do think your idea of having an account linked to your 3DS is a good idea! My phone is like that and changing 3 times I've still managed to switch my account to each phone so I don't lose all my contacts ^^
I do worry about that, though I never put expensive electronics out of my sight in public places. I've had friends leave phones and such in bathrooms... just don't get how you can leave a $300 piece of equipment laying around! I also don't understand how anyone could be horrible enough to steal something that cost someone a ton of money either though.
In any case, that's one of the reasons why I really, really, really want Nintendo to make a Steam like account system. I'm also terrified of something malfunctioning in my 3DS, or making it otherwise unplayable. I've heard horror stories of people getting screwed out of tons of games and such because Nintendo couldn't prove they had purchased them and therefore wouldn't refund when something happened to the system. If it were bound to an account, not only could you implement more interesting features and interactions between said accounts, but it could keep record of anything that was purchased.
I would definitely buy a LOT more games from Nintendo's eshops if they worked like Steam or the PSN.
For those who don't know, there is a way to get your money back if your 3DS is stolen.
A few weeks ago my 3DSXL was stolen. I panicked because I had 42 downloaded games on it. Today, I just got them ALL back! Here's the steps I took.
1. File a police report AND request a copy - You MUST file a police report or else they won't be able to give you your games back. Do it right away because it will take 3-5 business days to process. I had to file online which took a few days and then I paid 6$ for a copy to be sent to me.
2. Call Nintendo customer service - Find the phone # on the website. Have the serial # of the stolen 3DS (and the replacing 3DS if you have it) and your club nintendo ID ready.
3. Send a copy of the police report via fax or E-mail - Make sure to write your name, telephone, 3DS serial numbers and a detailed summary along with it.
I faxed the report and 2 full days later they reimbursed me $195 onto my club nintendo account to buy back my games and gave me download codes for all the games I downloaded via club Nintendo rewards. Nintendo was very easy to work with through the whole process, I couldn't be happier right now, I thought all of my games were lost for good. I just hope this can save someone from losing all their games!
EDIT: just want to say this was in the USA, it seems to differ between countries.
Considering I NEVER bring my 3DS anywhere public really besides my friends, I don't think anybody is going to break into my house, and specifically look for my 3DS and steal it. Being a guy who has multiple gaming consoles, including more modern ones such as PS3, and Xbox 360, I think they'd be looking for one of those consoles, instead of a Nintendo handheld. Personally I think thiefs are looking for genuine consoles, not specifically the 3DS.

What if you go outside and bring your 3DS with you?
I am afraid it will get stolen. Which is why it never really leaves my house. If it does, it never leaves my sight or I always touch it to make sure its still there. Remember what Nintendo taught us, touching is good.

I'm probably missing on same hilarious, witty joke here..

Wat?
For the DS Nintendo used the slogan "Touching is good." Which they no longer use for... obvious reasons. I can only think of one commercial right now.
When the 3DS first came out I got an Aqua Blue one.I accidentally left it behind at a Chinese resturant and then when i went back to get I found out that some chinese employee gave it to her son.Luckily I got 3DS XL a year later.I wrote on it's sylicone case "IF U TOUCH THIS U WILL DIE".Since it's so big,I most likely wont forget it.

Heh, I left my DS Lite on a bus :c I'm guessing someone who got on the bus stole it as it was in the middle seat at the back instead of handing it in! I was devastated!
