I don't know how to feel about this movie.
It's not Episode 1 or 2 bad, granted. The acting and writing aren't that atrocious, but this film felt way too long, and way too tryhard.
The best way to put this, is that the film insists upon itself. It...felt like it wanted to be a shocking and intelligent film, which is a great thing, but...the plot doesn't really work for me.
Okay so the Luke/Rey I was fine with. It wasn't all that bad and at least didn't cause problems as much as the Holdo/Poe and Rose/Finn plots did.
The Holdo stuff is more or less contrived. She basically doesn't tell anyone the simple plan of hiding on Crait, for zero godamn reason. I genuinely don't understand what the hell she was doing.
Poe at least was okay, but his character arc of not being cocky seemed really half-assed. I don't how to explain it but it's genuinely just felt like he didn't change throughout the whole movie.
Finn and Rose plot point felt stupid, but it did have one profound scene. The scene were the codebreaker reveals that arms dealers were selling to both sides was really interesting and intelligent, it sure was cool of them to immediately drop that topic and just do the obvious traitor plot twist instead.
The last battle of the film is okay but Finn being saved by Rose just doesn't work. I don't know how to say this but Finn being saved by Rose when he was trying to do a selfless act that would have saved lives just felt...like it was insisting upon itself, to reuse the phrase. It wanted to subvert expectations, and did so in a way that felt...safe. It felt safe to keep Finn alive, which was ironic cause they killed off Snoke and Phasma (I was okay with those deaths tbh).
Luke was pretty great honestly. His final scene with Kylo was pretty great and his last talk with Leia was pretty good. Shame he dies but I understand.
Anyways, I've said my peace. Next is...Rise Of Skywalker...
