AT&T had no sympathy for a family who lost their home in the San Diego fires this week. Upon returning to their home to find it completely destroyed, a married couple in the area contacted the tech conglomerate to cancel their service. They were promptly asked if they managed to save their satellite receiver from the burning building, and, when they said no, were told that they'd be responsible for the $300 fee for the lost equipment.

Not only that, but, when they asked if the homeowners insurance they had could pay the bill, they were told that they would have to pay the bill on time, just like everyone else, or risk having to pay a penalty and a deposit for the re-installation of their service.

Nice, AT&T.

UPDATE: AT&T have responded to this story by saying that the couple were transferred to a customer service rep from Dish Network, who didn't follow the correct disaster protocol within the company. We're sorry to AT&T for the mistake, and, clearly, this is all the work of one particularly douchy customer service rep.
