An employee at telecommunications giant AT&T may have stolen customers' personal information, including Social Security numbers and drivers' license numbers, the company disclosed in a letter to affected customers. The theft occurred this August, and the employee has since been fired.

It's not clear how many AT&T customers were affected, but an unnamed source told Reuters the number was about 1,600 -- far smaller in scope than more recent data breaches such as those at JPMorgan Chase, which exposed contact information for 83 million individuals and businesses, and Home Depot, in which 56 million payment cards were stolen.

This is disappointing that people who trusted ATT with their private information by subscribing to ATT for phone, internet, and cell phone service may now have their personal information stolen, and in the hands of criminals like the mafia, cyber gangs, and identity thieves who bought ATT users private data from this bad ATT employee.

I think people should be given the choose to subscribe to services like internet, phone, and cell phones more anonymously without giving out their social security number, driver license number, and address since people can always pay by using prepaid cards which they bought from a store, or with Bitcoin which let people pay anonymously online.

Fired? The employee needs to be arrested.

Maybe the guy fled to Russia, or another country like Edward Snowden who stole info from the NSA, and escaped the US, and is now living in Russia.
