North American audiences opted for demons and thieves over a return trip to Pandora at this weekend's box office. The Last Exorcism, which was reportedly made for under $2 million, debuted at No. 1 with an estimated $21.3 million, while the re-release of James Cameron's sci-fi epic Avatar, with an extra eight minutes of footage, failed to even crack the top 10 releases, earning a mere $4 million for a 12th place finish. But weep not for the Na'vi: Avatar's domestic cume now stands at $753.8 million.
And, in fairness to Avatar, it was only re-released in 812 theaters (albeit in 3D and IMAX ones that charge more) versus Last Exorcism's 2,874 theater count.
Box Office Mojo reports that the battle for first place is actually close to a photo finish, with the heist flick Takers coming in just behind Last Exorcism with $21 million.
The Expendables dropped to third place with $9.5 million. Eat, Pray, Love was in fourth with $7 million, and The Other Guys remained in fifth place with $6.6 million.

They pushed avatar too much by bringing it back to the theaters.
