As the annual Anime Expo 2008 begins today at the Los Angeles Convention Center, the uninitiated might wonder what exactly to expect at this event as it runs throughout the holiday weekend… Sure, there will be plenty of panels and screenings and celebrity guests, but that's only the beginning. Behold:
* AMV Contest: The Anime Music Video contest lets participants "make an awesome music video using various clips from anime."
* AX Idol: You've heard of American Idol, of course? Well, AX Idol is the same thing, only all anime-y and what not.
* Masquerade: "If you have the motivation, the skills, and the bloodlust to compete in one of the most prestigious anime Masquerades, come join us!" says the official Anime Expo website. "Meet new and interesting people! See wonderful and exotic costumes! Witness the glitz, the glamour, and the glory of Masquerade!"
* Masquerade Ball: Don't forget this event, a "cooperative event from the Cosplay Events and Dance Depts" -- a Ballroom dance and individual amateur costume contest, done in cosplay style, of course.
* Midnight Tea: The Lolita fashion scene does the tea thing, when the clock strikes 12.
* Pop Shock Masquerade: J-Pop, J-Rock, EGL, Lolis, Visual Kei, or whatever your bag is, this is the costume contest for J-Pop aficionados.
* Chibi Masquerade: Yet another costume thang, this time for those who suffer from stage fright, apparently…
* Concerts: Jyukai and Yoko Ishida will be performing Friday, July 4th, from 1:00pm to 2:30pm in the Nokia Theater. Shoko Nakagawa will be performing Saturday, July 5th, from 1:00pm to 2:00pm in the Nokia Theater.
