What is a bad book in a series you otherwise enjoy?

Did the series improve thereafter, or did it never recover?

Harry Potter and The Cursed Child is infamous, there's also the Diary Of A Wimpy Kid series, Book 10 is not very good.

If you've ever seen the show Dexter, many are surprised to learn it has a book series - and they divert entirely from the series (after Book One, that is).

The series is different in many ways (ones that would be spoiler-y to explain). Overall, I prefer the show in the end, but the series is definitely worth a look. Like the show though, it goes a little off the rails (but in a much weirder way). The second book is a lot of fun and I'd say it's up there with Season 4 of Dexter with its serial killer.

However, somewhere down the road, they start looking into Dexter's dark passenger (the name he has given to the desire to kill) and they come to some bold conclusions - that it's a supernatural entity (really). Hereafter, it becomes more stupid-fun throughout. The writer never has the emotional weight that the series has, but he doubles down on the dark humor.
