Belen is a 2025 film directed by Dolores Fonzi, who also stars in it. The film is about reproduction rights in Argentina during the false imprisonment of Belen, who was falsely charged with an illegal abortion.
As you can tell, this is a very politically charged movie, and as such, it's an emotional and charged portrayal of a real court case.
My very honest feelings on this film are that it was good, but I also felt like it was a lot duller of a film than what I was expecting.
The film does start off pretty well. The opening does a good job at setting up the initial arrest and tragedy of the story before introducing the lawyer. But after that point, I found the film to be a bit boring at times.
The best way to describe it, is that the interesting aspect of the film, Belen, is undermined by the less intriguing lawyer character. After the opening scene, Belen is significantly less present for the film and that doesn't really work for me.
I won't try and pretend like that choice ruined the film, but it does weaken it.
There's also a pretty weak secondary cast. I found myself constantly needing reminders as to who is who and why they're there. No one outside of the main two characters really holds their own.
That's more or less the two major problems with the film, and I don't really want to keep writing this out, so I'll just say that this could've been better and end it at that.
